8 May 2012 Trailblazers involved as powerchair football league reaches climax
Trailblazers Stevie Pearson, Helen Phelps-Starbuck, Nicky Baker and Cath McNicol all represented teams at the latest round of the Wheelchair Football Association Premiership in Nottingham this weekend.
Powerchair football, which now has two national leagues, has taken off over the past decade and the England side, featuring Stevie Pearson, are current World Cup runners up having lost out to the USA in the final in France in 2011.
Trailblazers Project Manager Bobby Ancil travelled to Nottingham to get his first glimpse of the sport this weekend and found himself caught up in the festival like atmosphere of powerchair football.
Bobby said:
I really wasn't sure what to expect, as although I'd heard lots about the sport I'd never actually seen a match. I soon found myself sucked into the competitive nature of powerchair football and was impressed by the skill of the players and the passion of the fans on the sidelines. I'll definitely be going again.
In the penultimate round of matches, in the national powerchair football league this weekend, teams from across the country took on each other to compete for the coveted title of powerchair football champions of England.
Hot favourites and reigning champions Aspire had a rare tough weekend, which saw them struggle to break down the solid defences of Sporting Club Albion, Nottingham PFC and Percy Hedley Panthers, blowing the league wide open going in to the final weekend of matches over the 26th and 27th of May.
